Risk management has been emphasised in the new Code of Practice for the Governance of State Bodies. The obligations on Board members and senior executives include the development and updating of risk management policies, Board approval for the risk management framework and arrangements to monitor its effectiveness. Issues relating to board oversight of risk management, the potential to designate a chief risk officer and board audit and/or risk committee responsibilities require discussion and decision.

There is a growing amount of guidance available in this area. The International Standards Organisation (ISO) in 31000:2009 ‘Risk Management – principles and guidelines’ establishes a number of principles that need to be satisfied to make risk management effective.This event will draw on the experience and insights of people who have been involved in the standard setting process and in designing effective risk management processes.

The speakers include

• Linda Hendy ,Standards Officer with the National Standards Authority of Ireland
• Gerard Joyce is director of LinkResQ,Chairman of the NSAI Risk Management Consultative Committee, member of the ISO Risk Management Group.
• Aidan Horan is director with responsibility for governance, risk management and audit services at the IPA
• Dermot O Riordan,public sector finance specialist at the IPA, with responsibility for programmes on the internal audit services and public sector audit committees

The Briefing will take place on Thursday 24th June 2010 at the IPA.Breakfast will be served from 8.00am. The presentations and open forum discussions will run from 8.30 – 10.30am.
