How should board members be selected and developed?
At a recent seminar in the IPA the Minister for Finance, Brian Lenihan T.D., said he would find it of value to have available lists of persons with the competencies to serve as Board members and a willingness to take on such roles. This Forum event is designed to promote an active discussion on effectiveness in the board room.
The discussion will include two presentations on the selection of board members and the carrying out and getting benefits from board evaluation. The discussion, involving a panel of experienced board room participants, will address key issues including:
- Which competencies are necessary and desirable?
- What are the benefits of different approaches to nomination?
- How should board evaluation be approached?
- How should Member induction and development be approached?
- To what extent should a board member be an expert in governance and / or in the business area?
- Is it becoming more/ less attractive to be a public interest director?
